Pompeii is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. It was covered by ash and lapilli after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The excavations were started by king Charles III of Bourbon and they are still today, the best testimony of Roman life in a very ancient era. Inside the archaeological site you can admire numerous temples, streets and even villas including: the Temple of Jupiter, Via Foro, the streets of the city of Vesuvius, the arch of Caligula. Founded by the Greek Hero Hercules which takes its name from, Herculaneum rises at the foot of Vesuvius. In 62 AD. there was an earthquake that damaged a large part of the city and after the beginning of the restoration to get back, there was a blockage of the works due to the eruption of Vesuvius which took place in 79 AD.
The city of Herculaneum was destroyed by the terrible eruption because it was only a few kilometers away from the volcano. With the city, its ports, rivers and all the immense heritage it enjoyed also disappeared. The rediscovery of the city of Herculaneum was truly accidental and it’s due to the Prince D'Elboeuf who gave the order to dig a well thank to they found marble and statues of the Ancient Herculaneum Theater. Today it is possible to admire many buildings, houses, shopping centres, mosaics, statues and objects in a perfect state of conservation thanks to the incandescent lava. Among the many wonders present here we find the Villa dei Papiri, home to an ancient library where a rich treasure of Roman manuscripts was found.
